Florence

Florence is glorious. It is not as cold, there is sun shine and the cobbled streets and beautiful buildings on our way to the Hotel again are stunning yet different from what I have already witnessed. BJL stayed at the Grand Hotel Cavour 15 years ago and it hasn't been renovated since, but it it lovely. It used to be a palace and in the main foyer there is a mark to shown the height of the water in the floods of 1966. http://www.albergocavour.it/

The Old Palace
As is our practice we go for a wander and within metres of our hotel we come across some absolutely beautiful sights. The Duomu is just around the corner, the old Palace is just up the road, and a block away we come to a beautiful square Piazza della Signoria Here I see the first of many statues including a copy of David.

We look for a location for lunch and the one that BJL has in mind is closing until dinner and we attempt to book in for dinner when we return to the hotel but cannot get in until the next evening. So we wander and find a small bar. What a find. A lovely little back room with wine everywhere and a waiter who is very personable. We all choose something light and I have the usual coca cola light with the wine and water. But this is no usual coca cola light. The bottles have been covered with plastic and designed by top designers. I ask to keep the bottle and I can so I can show you later, but another customer comes and orders coca cola light and he gives me her bottle as well. What a darling. At this point the B's attempting to move me off coca cola light to coffee seem to have hit a rock. They decide it is better to try again latter. This great find is a small cafe linked to the GustaVino http://www.gustavino.it/

We move off from here, inquire about tickets for tomorrow and try and find a restaurant that BJK remembers fondly. We fail but in the process go over the old bridge, window shop and get some gelato. On the way back we visit the Baptistery. How beautiful and again amazing. Stunning. And this is only our first afternoon.

We return to our hotel and then go too the roof for pre-dinner drinks. We have spumante and admire the view by evening. We are so close to the Duomo we can nearly touch it.

After this little relax and photo shoot we set out for dinner to a restaurant called Trattoria Gabbriello within easy walking distance. Well it would be if not for fashion week. People spilling onto the streets just across from our hotel. And we look just like everyone else in their finery. Well maybe not. Heels, leather, hair, the beautiful people. We feel we represent Newcastle well and are a fine example of the Fitness Junction success story. Not sure if Dino would agree. Dinner is good although BJL was somewhat picky about the salad with corn and carrot. BJK, of course, has taken on the responsibility of now ensuring that these maligned vegetables join the humble pear in his promotion of their finer qualities. BJL may live to regret his words.
After dinner we fought our way through the fashion crowds and returned to our hotel. Tomorrow is our first full day in Florence.

Thursday 13th and a beautiful day. Up and out for breakfast but our proposed spot was not open so ended at another nearby cafe for a light breakfast. Nice but nothing to write home about. Then conference time. We discuss our possible options for the day. These can be fun, especially when we compare them to work meetings and send them up around the shared chairmanship, active minutes and noting items for the agenda. Despite the lack of any formal format they work well and are so good they can change whenever we want.

Statues of Hercules and David in the Piazza della Signoria

The entrance to the area of the Uffizi

another view of the Uffizi area

Today we set our for the Uffizi. Another amazing experience. This museum is huge but the B's assure me what I see in Rome is even bigger. The ceilings were all hand painted with amazing pictures and there were 30+ rooms in a "u" shape with paintings, sculptures and beautiful stoneware. Able to see links between the items and history of Spain and items we are seeing here today. Just awesome.

There are a number of tour groups also in the Museum and they just move in and swamp you and everyone in their path. One can understand it but it is quite amazing to watch. Fortunately there is not a lot of tourists at this time so the tour groups are minimal. Some area are closed due to renovations and restorations. They appear to do everything possible to ensure you still experience that area despite this activity. They have videos to show what they have done, what they are moving and to keep you informed. There appears to be a lot of work going on at this time of year, probably because it is the down season. Some buildings being restored or repaired have covers over the facade outlining what is underneath so you do not feel that you are missing quite so much.

The Uffizi is just astounding. Huge, beautiful and overwhelming considering the work that has been collected and restored. The history is astounding. Makes me feel very humble about our (Australia's) youth. Half way through we visited the cafe for some sustenance. Simple snack although costly in comparison to most prices we have experienced in Italy. Then we returned to our viewing of the art work. I think we were there for about 4 or 5 hours. After leaving and before lunch we attempted to see the work by Damien Hirst called "for the Love of God". Too late so will follow that up tomorrow (Friday).

We then move off in search of lunch. BJK is fed up with me asking where we are going to go so he not too magnanimously gives me the choice. I select our bar where we had our first lunch and got the coca cola light bottles. All agree, but here is the thing. BJK thinks he manages to confuse me and misdirect me (I will point out this is not the first time), and leads me and BJL in the wrong direction. I follow quietly and as can be expected he finds a delightful little place that we have not been to before. It is not so little on this occasion and is packed. Standing room only but we go in and leave BJL to clarify how things work. This is standard practice too I have found. He does this extremely well. I would suggest he has had a lot of practice. That done, we order and BJL then organizes us about watching for seats, getting the coffee and getting the food. Just as all that happens 3 seats are available and we can sit and eat our selection against the wall. I will point out by seats I mean wood on the wall that will hold you to sit on. Nothing fancy but very convenient and serviceable. In this case lunch is a slice of pizza and coffee / water. Lovely. We forgo the pastries as neither one of us can choose from the large selection. We decide to return for breakfast on Friday.

On leaving I find a small chocolate shop - no way am I missing this opportunity. Apart from liquid chocolate I have been in withdrawal for a number of weeks now. I choose a few lovely little pieces for us all. The man keeps giving me more to try - I could have stayed longer but the B's are waiting outside. When I go outside to find they have been spending their time wisely selecting wine for our pre dinner drink tonight.

After lunch I return to the hotel and the B's are making their way to the old palace which is now a museum very near our hotel. We could have walked together but we went in different directions - no good reason why. Anyway, I find a lovely little shop on my way back called "my walit" - I bought a purse, come small handbag. Lovely and even better it was on special.

I then proceed to return to the hotel and here are the B's waiting out the front. I think they are waiting for me. Wrong. They are getting a taxi as the museum across the road is closed for some reason we do not understand. After clarifying that they have not booked a taxi it is agreed I will join them after returning to my room, using the toilet and leaving the shopping. Seems simple but the cleaner is in my room so I just drop the stuff and cross my legs. About to tell the B's that I will not join them when they stop a taxi and I hop in and go with them. We take the taxi to Fiesole which is a Etrusan-Roman town located at an altitude of 300m above sea level and about 9km out of Florence. The area consists mainly of hills and offers outstanding views of Florence and surrounds in addition to the rich art heritage.

A view across the road from the main square

A quick glimpse back from the bus
It is lovely but my knee is hurting and I decide to wait in a cafe, go to the toilet and have a look around after sitting for a few minutes. They buy the bus tickets and I sit in the little cafe, buy a coca cola light and go to the toilet. Well here is a surprise. There is no seat. I look at it for a few minutes and am stunned.  I had heard of these European toilets but thought they no longer existed. wrong. I consider what can I do. There is no easy and obvious solution. There is no way I can squat - either I will fall onto the floor or I will not be able to get up. Furthermore I am concerned I will pee on my shoes or on my cloths. Taking these layers up and down is a skill in and of itself. So I flush and wash my hands without any relief.

To add to this the room is like a very small closet so turning requires great skill and the tap at the wash basin has no handles. No, it is not one of those new ones where you move your hands under it and the water runs, it just doesn't have taps. There is a slight dribble from the tap so I manage with that.

The cafe itself is quite interesting. Clearly a fan of Elvis and Mohammad Ali. There are lots of photos on the walls of Hollywood stars like Marilyn, Frank, Dean and Sammy, local people and soccer stars. All seem to be from newspapers or magazines. A number of the local photos have nicknames like Fonzie and Little Richard.

The cafe is reasonably busy with locals and others providing a constant stream of customers. Another female came and appears to have used the toilet with no problem, was away a reasonable period, heard the toilet flush and the washing of hands. At another point a man came in asking for a takeaway coffee. Not available, only have china cups, no takeaway cups.

They also advertise gelato but there is no gelato. I settled for chocolate torte.

After finishing my cake and coke I go outside with the view of wandering around (and perhaps finding a toilet with a seat) and taking some photos. At this point I run into the B's just in time to catch the bus back. We check out one of the small shops but left empty handed. Got on the bus.

There was another church BJK wanted to visit but there was some concern it might not be open. As we are going down the hill they notice the church, it is open and off they hop. The bus had stopped. I continue in the bus back to Florence and then taxi back to our hotel. They return some hours later after more exploring and getting tickets for Rome on Saturday.

Thursday 13th January, evening after a short rest we meet for drinks in the B's room, watch the news and then they go onto the roof after we shared some of the chocolate I had bought. I do some much overdue washing. I think I have failed to mention that the news of Australia is about the floods in Queensland. They are on every day and the situation gets worse.

We have a booking at the restaurant we could not get into the first day here. It is a little hole in the wall with four tables and operated by a couple and their son. He manages the front of house. The restaurant is called Vini Vecchi Sapori and we started with a mixed Affettal Tuscani which is a plate of three different meats. For our Primi course BJK had Ribollita alla Fiorentina which is a vegetable bread soup. BJL had Paccheri ai Fiori di zicca e Zafferand (zucchini flower pasta) and I had Ravioli Ricotta and Spinag Rose.
For mains I had Roast Beef al Fornoe Panate; BJL had Ossa Bucca el Vitella con Pijelli and BJK had Trippa Alla Fiorentina - that is tripe.

We had a litre of red wine and two bottles of water to aid the digestion. Then we managed sweets. I had cheese cake and pear whilst BJL had Tiramusu ai Lampon. Delightful. I have an idea we had another sweet but that was only the B's.

The restaurants we have been to really give an impression of service. Not overdone but always there to assist, recommend if you need help and generally make you feel very special. This was no exception.

Today is Friday 14th and I had a restless night. The room gets quiet hot but all was well once I got up. No early morning discussion this morning. Straight to yesterday's lunch spot for breakfast. Not crowded so we got a table and had some pastry and hot chocolate - coffee for the B's. Then we went to see the Damien Hirst "For the Love of God". I quote from the web page.

For the Love of God, the skull studded with diamonds realised by English Artist Damien Hirst, which has become legendary since it was displayed for the first time in 2007, will be on view at Palazzo Vecchio, in Florence, from 26th November 2010 to 1st May 2011.For the Love of God is a platinum life-size model of a human skull studded with 8,601 absolutely pure and almost flawless diamonds, for a total of 1,106,18 carats. A large pear-shaped pink diamond is located in the forehead, also known as the “star of the skull”, while the teeth were taken from a real 18th-century skull bought by Hirst in London.
The diamond skull has no precedents in the history of art. From a certain point of view, the work represents a traditional “memento mori”, an object which deals with the transitoriness of the human existence. As the Dutch art historian Rudi Fuchs says: “The skull is out of this world, almost celestial. It proclaims victory over decay. At the same time, it represents death as something infinitely more relentless. Compared to the tearful sadness of a vanitas scene, the diamond skull is pure glory”.

It continues to astounds me how many places there are with huge rooms, amazing art work, high ceilings and marble stairs. Well here we are again. On this occasion we were a bit early so had the chance to view the rest of the Palazzo Vecchio which is the historical seat of the government of the city of Florence. The palace visit begins with Great Hall of the Five Hundred and continues on the upper floor with the Apartment of the Elements, the Private Chamber of Eleanor, and the Priors and ending on the Mezzanine between the second and first floors.

After this the Damien Hirst exhibit was open to us. Well, talk about theatre. You enter a completely dark room with a guard and he has a small torch. The diamond encrusted skull is in a glass box and the lighting is such that it highlights only the skull and diamonds. You cannot see where you are standing or where you are about to step, nor can you see the faces of the other visitors. There was one other and the guard when B's and I were there. Amazing but macabre.

After this visit we went to the Mecini Palace. Beautiful again. Then the big event - David at the Academia. We walked there and my left knee was causing problems so I was very slow. The B's were very good. When we finally got there the effort was worth it. He is beautiful. BJL is also able to give some significant background which just makes the viewing so much better.  He (Michelangelo) was commissioned to undertake this when he was 26 years old. Astounding. I also loved the unfinished works along the hall as you move down to get closer to David. These are pieces of stone (marble) that he had started to work into human figures but did not finish. What is amazing is that from a block of stone he can then create something recognisable and beautiful. Altogether extremely valuable experience.

Then I came back to the hotel. Before returning I stopped at a bar not far from the hotel and had some Pizza and a coca cola light and wine. Lovely. The B's have gone to see some other notable sights.

Just a few observations. I love the narrow streets and the walking areas although for me these have been problematic as I think the cold, cobbles, marble and uneven surfaces and a lot of walking has exacerbated my knee problems. That aside though, I really like how the streets are small and narrow. Parking seems to be on one side or the other and then it is a very tight fit for most vehicles to go just one way. Speeding is virtually impossible and the marriage of small cars, bikes and taxis seems to work well with pedestrians fitting in as well.

This evening is our last in Florence and BJK ha arranged a booking through the hotel for a restaurant in Academia. Before setting out for that we had considered cancelling and going to the restaurant associated with the hotel. The problem was we would not get in until 9:30pm. So we decided to have a drink there and take a taxi to the restaurant (check name with Brian). This we did only to find the restaurant did not open for evening meals and was about to close. The woman however provided us with the card of another restaurant not too far away in another street, adding that there were one or two others we might like as well. She recommended this one as the food is good and the prices reasonable. So off we set. Before we find the recommended restaurant the B's spot another possibility. Keeping that in mind we then find the other restaurant. The debate that followed was around the plastic flowers, the number of stickers on the door, how they are displayed and whether we should go back to the other restaurant. On these occasions I endeavor to defer to the B's greater experience but of cause that has it's problems when they have different opinions. The result was, as usual, BJL goes in to check whilst BJK remains outside after arguing solidly for this location based on no prejudgements because of the labels, the plastic flowers and the menu has wild boar.

As one would expect the cover was not representative of the establishment and as it has wine glasses, tablecloths, was clean and warm and already had several customers we decided to remain. The menu then was examined along with the wine menu and we were won over. Of course I think BJL will be wearing this one for some time but fortunately he also has one or two up on BJK so they both have plenty to talk about over future dinners. The restaurant was known as i'Toscano. http://www.itoscano.it/  We started with grilled bread and dips. This was very tasty. I particularly liked the chilli dip but the others were good too. Then we had our first course. We all chose the Bread Vegetable soup (Ribollita alla Fiorentina). For the main course I had Faggotini Pear and cheese with butter and thyme sauce. Best pick of the House. BJK had wild Boar and Pomegranate whilst BJL had pasta with Boar Sauce. For sweets I had Zucotto which was pretty good and BJL had Biscotti Vin Santo.
We taxied to the hotel and all slept well.

This morning (Saturday 15th January) we leave Florence for Rome. Firstly the B's visited the Palace across the road whilst I finished packing and had breakfast in the hotel. Reasonable but nothing to write home about.

We travelled by fast train with no problems. The trains are clean, fast and quite comfortable. No incidents on this occasion.

Leaving Venice

Wednesday 12th and we leave Venice. We have a mid morning departure by train so no big drama. We prepare at leisure, pack, have breakfast and pay our bill. All goes well. The B's go for a final walk and I stay behind to read. At this point I will tell you my e reader has been brilliant. Love it. Anyway the B's wander off, find some little cafe for coffee and bring me back a small cake for the train. Have I sung their praises before? I must say that being with them has made this trip so much more special. They have been very generous and whilst we do go our separate ways from time to time, I feel very welcome and they share so much information and knowledge that I am sure would be missed on any other tour. And they help with the luggage, find the most delightful locations to eat and drink, sights to see and stories to tell.

On their return we leave for the ferry, this is not too far away and we catch the ferry for the station. It is sad traveling down the canal and knowing you are leaving this beautiful city. On this short journey I see a family moving house and the relocation of furniture by boat is something else to see. Imagine moving furniture without a truck and walls to stack things against. They do it with ease. I see the markets, the Rialto Bridge, the beautiful homes, the history, the continuing need for maintenance, the ice green water and the people going about their business. And of course I see tourists.

We arrive at the station and move through this process with ease. We await the allocation of a platform for our departure and then find our seats. Waiting on the platform is interesting to watch the people - the locals greet each other with apparent joy and break into easy conversation that whilst I cannot understand a single word sounds beautiful.

We find our seats easily and settle for the trip. The conductor accepts our ticket and approves a move to a empty four seated group in the same carriage. So now we have a table and four comfy seats for the journey. Across the aisle is an Australian family. I did not feel comfortable with them and there was no attempt to talk with each other. My discomfort of this family was latter justified with an incident at the taxi where the man of the group was rude, pushy and generally unpleasant.

Back on the train it was interesting to observe the changes as we moved away from Venice. Initially we seemed to go through more industrialized areas. As we left the water it glimmered like silver and we then moved through the industrial area to more agricultural land, hills and our first sights of sunshine and blue sky in a week. Beautiful. We are now on our way to Florence. At the final stop two women get on - a mother and daughter. BJK thinks they are Russian. We were in their seats. The younger woman was fine and they sat at another four seater area in the next group of seats. The mother, however, was less than pleasant and her tone to her daughter suggested some irritation that we were using their allocated seats. Regardless of this the trip went well and we managed not to upset anyone else.

The B's return to Venice

Today, Monday 10th the boys returned. So good to see them and we spent ages just catching up and telling each other about our respective time apart. Clearly they had a good time and it was great to catch up. It snowed on Trento and they went snow walking and some very funny stories of these experiences were shared, particularly falling into the snow. They did a spot of shopping and the story about the silver credit card had us all laughing over dinner tonight. I am sure that this will take BJK through many dinners.
Apparently when he rescued BJL by paying for the purchase the woman at the counter made some sign like a cat. I can only assume BJK's tone relayed his frustration over the card.

The B's on the bridge near our accommodation

The B's in San Marco
Today after they returned we had lunch at the local Tavern across the way then went to San Marco to do some banking and also to check about mail. The post office was closed and seems to do so at 2:00pm daily. It was now 2:30pm. The B's were also having difficulty finding an ATM whilst I was still wandering purposely towards the hotel. During this purposeful wandering I was watching some Gondala's and failed to hear BJK's  instructions.

Railto Bridge

Gondola's and Railto Bridge

A beautiful Dome building on the Grand Canal
After being entertained by the Gondola's I continued to walk and realized that the B's had left me and simply assumed they thought I was fine by myself. I was of course, but after going over the Accademia bridge they came up behind me and gave me quite a start and had been wondering where I was. So then we were back at the hotel.

After a well earned rest we then set out for Harry's Bar in San Marco. BJK and I took the ferry and BJL beat us there. We enjoyed Harry's and after 3 Billinnis (1 each), 1 diet light, 1 martini and one snack and €85 we left. BJK paid.

JLK at Harry's Bar - Venice
Walking back to the hotel our discussion was about having lunch at Harry's Bar tomorrow. We agreed we would but I think we will reconsider in the morning. Found another little restaurant in a quiet square not far from our place and enjoyed our meal and wine, but the music was not so good - Janice Joplin and a number of other old American tunes that seemed to have no connection with the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. I did notice, however, that this did seem to the the theme in many restaurants throughout Italy.

On Tuesday 11th the debate about Harry's Bar continued over breakfast. At the point BJL was continuing to support the proposal whilst BJK and I were more ambivalent. The ambivalence was more about the cost so the decision was further deferred until the menu and wine list could be reviewed via the Internet. In other words BJK was to undertake more research. The result was that apparently there is a Harry's Bar over on ???. So this was now the plan. Visit the Accademia Gallery, go to San Marco to do the mailing, return to our local bar for a roll and wine then proceed to ??? and Harry's Bar and some exploration.

So off we go. We start with the Accademia Gallery. It continues to amaze me just how beautiful each different sight we visit is. Every time I think that this cannot be outdone, and the next location leaves me speechless with it's beauty, size, history, skills, and overall splendor. This Gallery was no exception. The facade looked good, but did nothing to prepare me for what awaited inside, nor did it prepare me for the overall expanse of the facility. Words elude me to continue describing the beauty and marvels of this trip.

On departing the Gallery we head for the post office. BJK was marvelous. He moved us through the process of parcels and regulations for posting. It was really quite impressive and I am sure his skills helped considerably in the whole process. That done we return to our favorite bar for a roll and wine. The main man seems to recognize us now and gives us a slight smile although in my case the attempts at Italian are pretty poor.

Then I return to the hotel and the B's continue to ????? For Harry's Bar and coffee. When next I see them the bar was closed but as one always expects they managed to find some lovely little spot for coffee.
Dinner is planned but I do not go - the B's have had recommendation from the hotel for a small restaurant not far from our accommodation. We had intended going to Montin again but it was closed.

Again they have hit on a lovely restaurant the highlight of which, apart from the food, was a young man who was telling them about his difficulties with girlfriends in Spain, Rome, Paris etc. Of course the B's were able to offer sound advice.

Brian at Harry's Bar

Venice Alone

It is the evening of Saturday 8th January 2011. The Bs have gone to Trento and I have had a few texts telling me they are safe etc. I spent the morning lazily, sorted the mail I need to do and then after showering etc and a number of texts with Robyn regarding the Hopman Cup, I went out. Caught the ferry from Accademia to San Marco to find the ferry for the three Islands trip. I was very early but everything moved nicely and I had that sorted together with the purchase of a book on Venice shortly after midday.

I then did some wandering around the lagoon area of San Marco. I found a very nice cafe called Al Vecio Penasa for lunch and had wine, ham rolls and Coca Cola light. The Gondola Guys were eating in the cafe as well so I felt this might be a good place for the locals.

Whilst having lunch I was watching the guy across the way managing the door of the restaurant opposite. He was not impressive and I think did more to discourage patronage than give people confidence to enter the premises. My lunch on the other hand was extremely nice. I then continued wandering along the lane looking in shops and generally getting some ideas for gifts.

During my wanderings I found a glass dog but they were all to prescriptive to breed and not suitable for Polly. I need something a little more generic. I had already purchased a small murano cat for Penny which is just lovely and has a hint of her colours through it.

After my lunch I continued to wander but was still slightly anxious of getting lost so I tended to stay around the San Marco lagoon area. I purchased a new scarf which is light grey and one complete round. €10 and nice a soft and warm.

Later I noticed a bride having her photo taken - it was quite cold and she was in a lovely strapless dress. Then I noticed that there were two other brides. They were lovely summer dresses getting their photos taken either individually or together or with a male partner. They kept moving locations along the shoreline with the water and the Venice skyline across from San Marco as the back drop. I am inclined to think they were modeling the dresses for a photo shoot rather than actually getting married.

That is enough, lets move one.

Anyway back to my day. There was a wait for the tour, largely because I was early but later because it seems that is how it all works. The fellow organising it was very personable but the rest of the day was less that brilliant. we were to leave at 2:10 pm., more like 3pm. This may not have worried me so much except it meant we would not get back until after dark and how much was I likely to see during the latter part of the tour. I also had a dinner reservation and I needed to find my way back from San Marco. As a wise and mature woman I am sure I will cope. There were about 70 on the boat and about 5 different languages. English, Spanish, Italian, French and Dutch.

Anyway we got underway. The microphone was too loud. Unfortunately the guide did not seem to change or introduce the next language so she moved from one to the other and before you knew where you were you heard English but by then she was nearly into the next language. The microphone was the major problem.

Added to this I think she and the two crew appeared friendly but there was tension. There was no safety information, the crew were very liaise faire and good chaps but when the boat stopped at an island we were locked off the boat until they returned. The guide got on but the tourists were not allowed to enter until the crew arrived. The guide provided information about each island and then generally left us to it. Given the poor acoustics, information was scarce and ineffective. The three of them seem really detached from us.

Other than that I really loved the views of Venice from this perspective. The mist and surreal atmosphere was just beautiful. The glass blowing was interesting but the shop had little of interest. They showed us nothing more of the island so our whole experience was the wharf and short walk on the wharf into the Glass Blowing factory.

The last island B was lovely. They had a lace making demonstration for us to see and the work was beautiful. The island is also famour for the fisherman's houses which are all painted in different colours. After that we had about 20 minutes to check out the main street. This was lovely with a number of shops open. By now it was quite dark so the street looked lovely all lit up. In the main square a number of children were playing Soccer and having a lot of fun. The other attraction here was the leaning church tower.

Before leaving the hotel I had booked the Tavern B&B and I went to on our first night. I am just now back from Dinner. It cost me €17 for Penne and Bolognese, quarter litre of Cabernet, half litre of water and gelato, and it was lovely.

The Grand Canal from the Ferry

Across our small canal to my favourite restaurant

Stores delivered in the mornings

On Sunday 9th January I caught the ferry at Accademia around the Grand Canal and got off at the railway station. There were several streets with a range of shops and I did a lot of wandering and purchasing gifts and things for myself. Finally found a suitable "Polly" back near the Accademia and the shop was not open. Every time I went past it was closed so I was about to give up but finally managed to obtain the piece today (Monday).

The ornament in the Gallery I want for Polly
The day was very cold and damp and after lunch at the little bar along the canal I returned to the hotel. Spent most of the afternoon reading and thinking about the holiday. In Venice I have often remarked about how green the water is. A beautiful green grey and it looks so cold. Of course I expect it is. The other thing is that the maintenance on the buildings must cost a fortune. They are so old and obviously get damp but people manage to maintain them. This visit is in winter and it is obvious that the summer season would be lovely given all the outdoor areas the business make available in these small spaces. Often the B's comment how busy Venice is in other season and how good it is at present as there is space to move and get around to see things. I appreciate that as well.

There seems many places I have not seen like the Jewish Ghetto Museum, Island of San Giorgio and a few other locations across canals. It is only on leaving that I get a sense of the significance of what I missed.
